Concerned about the Coronavirus? Here are a Few Simple Things Everyone Can Do to Protect Their Health

I don’t want to to add to the media hype regarding the Coronavirus, but a lot of people have contacted me asking what they can do to protect themselves.

Here are a few things you should know…

Much like the flu virus, the Coronavirus primarily affects the elderly and the immuno-compromised. These include people with unmanaged autoimmune conditions, respiratory illness, cancer and those taking immune-suppressing drugs. These people are also more likely to be hit harder by this novel virus.

If you don’t fall into one of these groups, it doesn’t mean that you cannot contract the Coronavirus, but the likelihood is reduced. You should still follow the recommended guidelines for protecting yourself and others, in addition to these immune-boosting tips. They can improve the overall health of your immune system and lower your susceptibility to viruses, bacteria and other pathogens that make people “sick”.

1) Eat an Anti-inflammatory Diet

Because approximately 80% of our immune system is located in our digestive tract, it’s very important to follow a diet that doesn’t cause digestive irritation. Many people eat foods that are high in sugar, chemicals and other harmful ingredients that weaken the immune system

The best solution is to focus on a whole-foods diet. These are the best nutrients for people’s health because they provide a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, they lower inflammation and they maintain healthy levels of good bacteria in the body.

2) Get Good Sleep

Restorative, restful sleep is the cornerstone of good health. This is something that we all know, but many still sacrifice this health-enhancing activity thinking that they can “catch up” on it later. Unfortunately, you can’t make up for lost sleep.

Even though you may be able to get by on less, between 7 and  9 hours of quality sleep per night should always be your goal. If you’re not getting this consistently, improving your sleep should become a top priority. Easy changes to make this happen include creating a routine with a consistent sleep schedule, removing light-emitting technology and keeping your bedroom cooler or turning down the heat at night.

3) Manage Stress

Chronic stress is a major concern because it increases the level of cortisol in the body. High amounts of this hormone have been shown to reduce the ability of the immune system to fight off viruses by decreasing the number of white blood cells in the body. Taking several breaks throughout the day and finding activities that help you unwind can dramatically improve this issue.

4) Boost Immunity with Supplements

To further protect yourself, there are great supplements that can offer added immune system support. I’ve included my top recommendations below.

*Be aware that some products may be temporarily backordered due to high demand.

Liquid Vitamin D3

Although the sun is the best source of Vitamin D, most people don’t get enough exposure on a daily basis to meet their needs. This even includes people in warmer climates like the southern United States. This nutrient strengthens the immune system and is vital to a variety of other body functions.

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral essential to proper immune system function. Used in the formation of white blood cells, this nutrient has been shown to prevent the spread of the rhinovirus.

Probiotic 50B

Probiotics support immune function and have been found to reduce the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections like the Coronavirus.

Grifron Maitake

Scientifically proven to promote healthy immune function, these mushrooms are immunomodulators, meaning they boost the immune system when needed  to help fight off infections.

Monolaurin-Avail

Monolaurin provides your body with a strong dose of the anti-viral nutrient lauric acid‚ along with inosine to boost immunity. Research has shown that this ingredient has a demonstrated ability to help treat many types of viral infections and protect you from further infections.
